Nigeria has promised continued commitment to Economic Community of West African States in ensuring peace, stability, and the restoration of democracy in the region.
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari made this commitment at the opening session of the 2nd ordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja where he and the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government were both honoured with awards of Excellence.
The arrival of President Buhari and the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government heralds the beginning of the opening ceremony of the 2nd ordinary session of the Ecowas Parliament.
Going by the calendar of the parliament sessions, this may be the last session President Buhari will be having with them. This explains the recognition and honour the ECOWAS Parliament presented him with.
The Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government and the President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo was also presented with an award of Excellence on promotion of regional peace and security.
True to these recognitions, President Muhammadu Buhari promised support for Sierra Leone and Liberia who will also be going to the polls in 2023 to elect New leaders He says he will ensure a seamless election process in Nigeria.
The focus of the Ecowas Parliament 2nd ordinary session is to consider the community budget of the region.
Nevertheless, the speaker reminds all present of the challenges the subregion is confronted with and the need to put community members first.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission also pledges commitment to continued collaboration with the parliament.
